“Otaku”

“Trainman” is an interesting movie that shows many different Japanese cultures. I think the most interest part is that the changing of DO, the changing of an Otaku.

“Otaku” is used to describe people who obsess or interests particularly in anime and manga. Most of them like to go to the place that full of anime, manga or electronics stores (For example, Akihabara).

In clothing, they may wear like old-fashion, vintage clothes, since they save all the money in buying the stuff they like (anime/ manga figure), they usually not care about fashion or hairstyle.

Some people don’t like the “Otaku” and isolate them, people think they are so weird. Actually, Otaku is nothing special like a normal person, they have friends that have the same interest, they also have a job to work. But since they spend too much time on their hobby, they used to talk in the social network and not the real life so they may lack social skills. They scare to try new things in the real life that they are not familiar with.

My workplace

I have a parttime job that sales Japanese anime figures, I have been working in this shop for almost 3 years,  I can always see some Otaku came and buy stuff. I can see that they are really scared to talk to you in the first time, especially I am a girl. However, when I ask something about the anime they love, they can talk so fluent like the movie that DO talk to Hermes about the film that he likes.

It is so fun that to see the culture not only show in the movie but our real life. In the movie, DO change because of a girl, he did not give up his interest but he gives a try and step forward to meet a girl in real life, try something he never did before. My colleague and I love seeing the changing of our customers. The change of their clothing, how they talk or even who they are brought to the shop.

The most unforgettable one is one customer who came to our shop so frequently, almost fourth-time a week. He wore the same clothing every day, never clean his beard for more than a years.

One day, he changed. He has a set of new clothes, clean his beard and get a new hair cut. And he came to the shop with a girl! It is just similar with DO. My colleague and I were so happy about it, see someone changing is so exciting even we do not know him.

“Otaku” is not weird, they just spend too much time on their interest. Moreover, having an interest is nothing wrong. Try and get to know them, they are just shy, also they should not be afraid to the real world, try step forward like DO, try something new and get the life better.

  1. What a friendly blog! The outlook of Otaku are so easy to distinguish … glassess, old fashion clothing etc… Due to the similar characteristics, a lot of people still misunderstand with Otaku, especially now we have a lot of different terms to describe people such as Dokuo. This blog helps Otaku to speak out they are not geek or nerd, they are normal people who love anime but lack of social skills. I am on behalf of Otaku say thank you!

  2. HAHA! I like your experience on meeting “Otaku” in your part-time job! I strongly agree with your point which is “Otaku” is not weird, everyone has their own interest. In Hong Kong, we can easily see that many Otaku in Sino Centre or CTMA Centre where are selling many anime figures, their outfits are easily recognized which is same with DO in the movie and considered as a mocking object, as their old fashion style is greatly different from trendy fashion. They are shy to communicate with strangers it is because this community labeled them, so that they may think they are isolated by society. In my own view, I totally agree with you that those people are not nerd or geek, they are like normal people like me and you!

  3. Beside “Densha”, there is another “Otaku” or “Hikikomori” inside this film. The “Hikikomori” is unwilling to step outside his room; he enjoys spending time with his rabbit. After the interaction with netizens, he finally steps outside his room to reach the world. Because the success of “Densha”, he has the courage to face the reality. Therefore, “Densha” changes others’ life while he is dating with “Hermes”.

  4. Wow, Tammy, what I experience you got! Only a girl can change a guy, to be honest, hahaha. if that guy didn’t meet that girl, I am pretty sure he would still be wearing the same clothes and wouldn’t even clean his beard.
